ONE PALACE DESTROYED OTHER IS BORN

.!.

The Palace of the Republic was the seat of the country’s Chamber in 1976, where the Germany’s Democratic Republic Parliament used to meet up, although it also had restaurants, as well as art galleries and a theatre.

It was made during the 1970’s where the Royal Palace of Berlin was located, which was extremely damaged during the Second World War, and demolished in 1950. The Palace of the Republic clearly has the architectural style of the time, with mirror-like windows in bronze.

Its knocking down was planned due to the fact that the palace was contaminated by asbestos and was dangerous. In 2003 all the asbestos, as well as all the furnishings had been removed, so it was decided to open it up to the public and use it as an area for expositions.

In November 2005 it was finally decided to proceed with the demolition of the building and leave it as a green area until the necessary funds so the Royal Palace could be rebuilt had been collected. This demolition had to be done very carefully because of the proximity of the Cathedral of Berlin.

Now you know that, when you visit Berlin and find this damaged area in the city centre hasn’t just been an oversight on the city council’s behalf, but rather a place which has been linked to the country’s history for many years now.
It’s clear that this place represents the history of a people who has suffered because of huge battles, but who are slowly rising to rebuilt all the beauty that these battles took away from the city.

And despite your apartamentos berlin and its modern buildings which contrast with the old Prussian monuments to make a unique place, Berlin will be an even more beautiful place when the Royal Palace finally is reborn, from the rubble of the Palace of The Republic.

You can get to know this history just that bit closer when you visit the city centre, and it will only take you a few minutes to get there to take a photo, from the cathedral.
