Paris places to visit
The deadliest side of food
If you have ever stayed in Paris holiday apartments then you have probably noticed that food plays a big role in the life of the French. You will be able to find dozens of expensive and exclusive restaurants in Paris and other French cities. Many Parisians will say that they would ?die for food? but not many people know that this has actually happened in the past. I came across this story and just had to share it with you!
Fran?ois Vatel was the personal chef of Louis II de Bourbon, Prince de Cond? and worked in the Chateau of Chantilly in the second half of 1600. He was known for his great cooking and loved by people around the country. He was also the inventor of the Chantilly cream that he created to serve on a extravagant banquet for 2,000 people.
One day in the beginning of April the Prince de Cond? got the anouncement that King Louis XIV would come for a visit at the end of the month. This was a very dubious honour since at that time he had not build Versailles yet to keep all the nobles and followers together so he insisted that they would all come along. Vatel and the Prince de Cond? only had fifteen days to prepare a meal for thousands of people amongst whom hundreds of Nobles.
The story goes that although nobody noticed Vatel was not able to serve a roast to every table and was devistated about this. Later the same night he decided he would have to make up for it and went to order huge amounts of fish for the next morning in order to prepare the best fish meal ever.
When the next morning at 4 a.m. only one delivery arrived Vatel went up to his room and pierced his own heart with a sword, not able to deal with another failure. Ironically he was found not long after by the people who where looking for him in order to tell him that the other fish deliveries had arrived as well.
